Jonava lies on the Neris river in central Lithuania, roughly between Kaunas and Vilnius. It was founded in the eighteenth century and for a long time had a large Jewish community, which formed much of the town's population before the Second World War. Today it is known above all for Achema, one of the country's largest fertiliser producers.
The Neris dominates the map. It curves broadly past the town and its bends and floodplain frame the built-up area. The older centre keeps a fairly compact street pattern near the river. Around it, post-war housing estates form large rectangular blocks. To the east, the industrial complex adds a separate, geometric grid of its own.
