Granite hilltops
Bare rock hills stand out at the edge of town. One holds the monolithic Bahubali statue, and the roads curve around their bases instead of climbing over them.

Kārkala Map Poster & Print
From above, Kārkala looks like a town fitted around the rock it stands on. Bare granite hills rise at the edge of the built area, and the streets bend to go around them instead of cutting straight through. Water tanks show up as clear shapes among the houses, and past the last lanes the map turns to paddy fields and the green slopes that lead up to the Western Ghats.
The town is best known for its Jain heritage. A monolithic statue of Bahubali, carved in the fifteenth century, stands on top of one of the granite hills, and the Chaturmukha Basadi, a temple with an entrance on each of its four sides, sits on another rise nearby. On a map the two sites appear as small quiet spots on high ground, with the town gathered below them.
A Kārkala map poster keeps the town's irregular shape: roads following the lie of the land, the smooth outlines of the tanks, and the loose edge where streets give way to fields and forest. Seen in plain black and white, Kārkala reads as a place shaped by stone and water rather than by planning.

Temple tanks
Still bodies of water appear between the streets as clean, solid shapes. They are some of the most recognisable forms on the map and break up the close grain of the houses around them.
Foothill edges
On the outskirts, the streets thin out into field paths and scattered buildings. The pattern hints at the Western Ghats rising to the east of the coastal plain.

For people with family roots in Udupi district, or who have climbed up to the Bahubali statue, Kārkala is a map worth keeping. The linework captures the rhythm of a small temple town without a single photograph.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a family name or the year of a visit. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
