Kitakyushu Map Poster & Print
Kitakyushu stretches across the northern tip of Kyushu, and its map is unusually broad and fragmented. The city was created in 1963 by merging five towns, Moji, Kokura, Yahata, Tobata and Wakamatsu, and each still keeps its own centre. The Kanmon Strait separates it from Honshu to the north, while Dokai Bay cuts deep into the western side.
The red Wakato Bridge spans the mouth of Dokai Bay, and tunnels and another bridge cross the Kanmon Strait to Shimonoseki. Yahata was home to the Imperial Steel Works, founded in 1901 and now part of a UNESCO site recognising Japan's industrial revolution. Kokura has a reconstructed castle, and Moji keeps a restored port district.
A Kitakyushu map poster shows a city of separate centres joined by rail lines and coastal roads, with water on several sides and hills in between. The layered pattern of bay, strait and districts makes for an intricate composition. It is an industrial city with a varied, surprising outline.

Dokai Bay
A long inlet reaching deep into the western districts, lined with industry and spanned near its mouth by the Wakato Bridge, dividing Wakamatsu from Tobata.
Five town centres
Moji, Kokura, Yahata, Tobata and Wakamatsu each keep their own street grids and stations, giving the map several distinct clusters rather than a single core.
