Kunduz lies in the north of Afghanistan, in a broad, fertile plain near the Kunduz river. From above, the city spreads outward from a central core, with main roads radiating toward surrounding towns. Beyond the built area, the land is divided into irrigated fields and orchards, crossed by canals that give the landscape a fine, patterned texture.
The region is one of the country's most important agricultural areas, known for cotton and rice, and Kunduz has long served as a trading centre for the north. The border with Tajikistan along the Amu Darya lies a short drive to the north.
