Hillside town
Houses crowd the slope in tight, uneven rows with lanes squeezed between them, a dense and restless texture unlike any planned town.

La Rinconada Map Poster & Print
La Rinconada lies in the Andes of Puno, in southern Peru, at an altitude of roughly 5,100 metres, and is widely regarded as the highest permanent settlement in the world. The town clings to a steep, barren slope below the glacier of Nevado Ananea, and from above it appears as a dense, irregular mass of buildings with narrow lanes squeezed between them and glacial lakes nearby.
The town exists because of gold. Thousands of people work in small-scale and often informal mines cut into the mountain, and the settlement has grown quickly and without a formal plan. There is no grid here; streets twist according to the terrain, while the pale expanse of ice above gives the map a sharp natural boundary.
A La Rinconada map poster is a portrait of one of the most extreme places people call home. It suits miners and their families, researchers who have studied life at high altitude, and travellers drawn to the edges of human settlement. In print, the contrast between the crowded town and the empty mountain around it tells the whole story of the place.

Glacier above
The ice fields of Nevado Ananea rise above the settlement, shown on the map as an open, unmarked zone that forms the upper edge of the composition.
Glacial lakes
Meltwater lakes in the surrounding basin add smooth, rounded shapes to the poster, a quiet counterpoint to the crowded streets beside them.

Few maps tell a stranger story. A print of La Rinconada marks life at the limits of altitude and endurance, and it makes a striking piece for anyone connected to the town, to mining or to the high Andes.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps adding the altitude or a date, and choose from five styles, with Noir or Blueprint especially strong here. Download six HD sizes for $9, or order a matte print shipped from partners in over 30 countries.
