Irrigation district
Canals fed by hill reservoirs divide the plain into regular parcels. They lay a geometric structure over the lowland around the town.

María la Baja Map Poster & Print
María la Baja is a municipality in the department of Bolívar in northern Colombia, on the lowland plain west of the Montes de María. The town lies where low hills give way to flat, often waterlogged ground. On a map the settlement appears as a compact grid surrounded by a wide agricultural landscape that stretches toward the wetlands.
The area is known for an irrigation district that draws water from reservoirs in the nearby hills, and in recent decades large oil palm plantations have spread across the plain. From above, this creates a pattern of regular plots and straight channels. It contrasts with the more organic lines of streams, marshes and the roads that climb into the hills.
Much of the population is Afro-Colombian, and the town shares cultural ties with nearby San Basilio de Palenque, known for its own creole language. A María la Baja map poster keeps this landscape in view: the town, the fields around it and the rising line of the Montes de María to the east.

Montes de María edge
The first slopes of the Montes de María rise east of the town, where roads become curving and the landscape grows more varied.
Wet lowlands
Toward the west, marshy ground and winding watercourses soften the map. They leave irregular shapes where the planted fields give way.
