The Rhône bend
The river turns almost ninety degrees just north of town. That gives the whole map a strong diagonal and explains why roads, rail and settlement all line up along the valley floor.

Martigny-Ville Map Poster & Print
Martigny-Ville sits where the Rhône valley makes its famous right-angle turn, swinging from a south-west course toward the north and Lake Geneva. The Drance comes down from the south to meet it here. From above, the valley floor is broad and flat, while steep contour lines crowd in on every side. The town fills the level ground between them, and orchards and vineyards climb the lower slopes.
The street pattern has two layers. A compact core centres on a long rectangular square lined with plane trees. Around it, newer quarters spread out in wider blocks toward the river and the railway. The town was the Roman Octodurus, and the outline of its amphitheatre still shows as a clean oval at the southern edge. Few small Swiss towns can put a Roman footprint on the same sheet as modern roundabouts.
A Martigny-Ville map poster also shows the town's role as a junction. One road heads south toward the Great St Bernard Pass and Italy, and another climbs west over the Col de la Forclaz toward Chamonix. In black and white, the roads fan out from the valley floor, and the mountains show only in the way everything bends to avoid them.

Roman amphitheatre
The oval of Octodurus's amphitheatre stands out among the rectangular blocks of the southern quarter. It is a clear two-thousand-year-old shape that reads well at any print size.
Roads to the passes
Routes toward the Great St Bernard and the Col de la Forclaz leave town in different directions. On paper they wind upward like threads pulled toward Italy and France.

For people who have crossed the Alps by car, hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc or grown up in Valais, Martigny is where the journey turns. A framed map of the bend and the passes keeps that sense of arrival and departure on the wall.
You can add a title, a subtitle such as a trip or a family name, and a date to the coordinates line. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
