Matinha lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a region of low, flat land in northern Maranhão that floods widely during the rainy season. For part of the year, fields and pastures turn into shallow lakes and marshes, and the landscape changes with the water. This shapes where people build and how roads cross the land.
