Mehidpur lies in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Shipra, the same sacred river that flows through Ujjain further upstream. From above, the town hugs the river. Its older lanes cluster near the water, while newer streets and roads spread outward over the level farmland of the Malwa plateau.
The town has a place in Indian history as the site of the Battle of Mahidpur in 1817. During the Third Anglo-Maratha War, British forces defeated the army of the Holkar state here, a turning point that led to British dominance in central India. Today Mehidpur is a quieter market town serving the villages around it.
