Valley streets
Roads and lanes bend along the valleys between hills, giving the town an irregular, organic outline quite unlike the rectangular grids common elsewhere on the island.

Minas de Matahambre Map Poster & Print
Minas de Matahambre lies in the province of Pinar del Río, in the hilly country of western Cuba between the mountains and the northern coast. Unlike the flat grids of many Cuban towns, its layout follows the terrain, with streets and houses spread along valleys and hillsides wherever the ground allowed.
The town grew around a copper mine that opened in the early twentieth century and became one of the most important in the country. Its shafts reached great depths, and mining shaped the settlement for decades before operations wound down in the 1990s. Traces of that industry remain part of the local landscape.
Its name translates roughly as kill-hunger mines, one of the more memorable place names in Cuba. A Minas de Matahambre map poster shows an unusual town shaped by geology rather than planning, with winding roads, green slopes and a compact settled core.

Mining landscape
Areas once used by the copper mine appear as open, irregular spaces near the town, a reminder of the industry that built the settlement.
Wooded ridges
Forested hills rise around the town, and the curving roads that cross them trace the relief of the uplands of western Cuba.
