Monção is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, in the Pindaré region of the state's low, well-watered west. The landscape here is flat, crossed by rivers and seasonal wetlands, with palm groves and pasture between them. The town itself is modest in size. On a map it forms a compact cluster of streets surrounded by wide stretches of open country.
The street pattern is straightforward: a mostly regular grid of blocks near the centre that loosens at the edges into unpaved roads and scattered houses.
