Newton is the county seat of Jasper County in central Iowa, and its map shows the familiar structure of a Midwestern town. A grid of streets surrounds a central courthouse square, with residential blocks extending outward and farmland beginning where the grid ends. Interstate 80 passes along the southern edge, a long, straight line across the page.
For much of the twentieth century Newton was the home of the Maytag company, and the town's identity was closely linked to manufacturing. Today it is also known for Iowa Speedway, whose oval track appears as a distinctive loop near the interstate and gives the map an unexpected, graphic feature.
