Oshmyany lies in Grodno Region, in northwestern Belarus, close to the border with Lithuania and not far from Vilnius. The Oshmyanka River winds through the town, and on the map its bends shape the old streets. The center has a compact layout, with the main roads radiating outward in several directions.
The town has a long history in the lands of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and its older churches, including a large Catholic church in the center, reflect that past. Around the center, blocks of low houses give way to fields, woods and small villages across a gently undulating landscape.
