Paducah sits where the Tennessee River meets the Ohio, and the whole city is oriented to that meeting. Downtown is a tidy grid of blocks running back from the waterfront. A floodwall separates the streets from the river, and neighbourhoods spread out west and south in a looser suburban pattern. From above, the two rivers frame the city in wide, calm curves.
The floodwall is known for its long series of painted murals depicting the city's past. Paducah has also built a reputation around craft. It is home to the National Quilt Museum, and in 2013 UNESCO named it a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. The Lowertown neighbourhood, next to downtown, became known for an artist relocation programme.

Downtown grid
Straight blocks run back from the riverfront in a regular pattern. The historic commercial district sits compactly between the floodwall and the later residential streets.
Lowertown
Just north of downtown, this older neighbourhood of narrow blocks and historic houses became the centre of Paducah's artist community and adds a finer texture to the grid.
