Palo del Colle is a town in Apulia, a short way inland from Bari. As its name suggests, the old town sits on a slight hill. From above, the historic centre is a dense, tangled knot of narrow lanes and small squares, and a looser band of newer streets surrounds it in a straighter, more regular pattern.
Beyond the town, the land of the Terra di Bari takes over. Olive groves and orchards divide the plain into fields, and country roads run in long, straight lines between them, sometimes interrupted by old stone walls and farm buildings.
