Porto Seguro lies on Brazil's Discovery Coast in southern Bahia, where the Buranhém river meets the Atlantic. From above, the town sits mostly on the flat land by the river mouth, while a thin strip of streets and beach roads stretches north along the shore.
On a bluff above the centre sits the Cidade Histórica, a small group of colonial churches and houses around a green square. It is one of Brazil's earliest settlements, founded near the stretch of coast where Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet arrived in 1500.
