São Mateus Map Poster & Print
São Mateus sits in the far north of Espírito Santo, where the São Mateus River, also called the Cricaré, loops through low coastal land before it reaches the Atlantic. On a map the town is a compact grid pressed against the riverbank. Newer neighbourhoods spread inland along the main roads, and the water draws a soft, curling line across the page.
It is one of the older settlements on Brazil's coast and dates to the sixteenth century. Its historic port district along the river recalls a time when boats carried goods up and down the Cricaré. To the east, the beach district of Guriri faces the ocean and adds a long, straight coastline to the composition.

Old port quarter
Along the riverbank, the historic port area forms the tightest cluster of streets. This small, dense patch marks where the town began before it spread onto higher ground.
Guriri coastline
East of the centre, the Guriri beach district lines the Atlantic with a straight shore and a grid of holiday streets. It gives the town a clean edge on the sea side.
