Qarasu Map Poster & Print
Qarasu lies in the Ili River valley in the far west of Xinjiang, close to the border with Kazakhstan. On a map the town reads as a tidy arrangement of straight roads and rectangular blocks, laid out on flat ground and surrounded by a patchwork of fields, tree-lined farm tracks and irrigation channels that stretch in long parallel strips.
The Ili valley opens westward between ranges of the Tian Shan, which gives it a milder and wetter climate than much of Xinjiang. That difference shows up in the landscape around the town: instead of desert, the surroundings are cultivated land, orchards and shelterbelts of poplars, all ordered along the lines of the water that feeds them.
Because the town is modest in size, its streets fill the frame without crowding it, and the surrounding field pattern becomes part of the design.
