Ridge-top roads
Rānikhet's main roads follow the crest of the ridge and wind down its slopes in tight curves, creating the flowing lines that define the town on the map.

Rānikhet Map Poster & Print
Rānikhet sits on a ridge in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, at around 1,800 metres, with pine and oak forest on the slopes below. On a map the town is shaped almost entirely by terrain. Roads curve along the ridgeline and loop down the hillsides, and the built-up areas spread thinly along them instead of forming a compact centre.
The British developed the town as a cantonment in the nineteenth century, and it remains an army town, home to the regimental centre of the Kumaon Regiment. On clear days it looks north across the valleys to a long line of Himalayan summits, including Nanda Devi. The orchards of Chaubatia and the high golf course at Upat lie nearby.
A Rānikhet map poster traces the delicate pattern of a hill town: the looping roads, the orderly layout of the cantonment, the scattered bazaars and the forest that fills the space in between. With so much open ground, the map has an airy, linear quality that makes it particularly elegant in a minimal black-and-white style.

Cantonment layout
The army cantonment gives parts of Rānikhet a more ordered structure, with widely spaced buildings, parade grounds and tree-lined roads set among the forest.
Forested slopes
Pine and oak woods cover much of the land around the town, leaving wide open areas on the map between the ribbons of road and settlement.

Rānikhet is a favourite summer retreat and holds strong memories for army families who served there and for travellers drawn by the mountain views. A map of its ridges and roads is a lasting keepsake of time spent in the Kumaon hills.
