Reçani Map Poster & Print
Reçani, more often written Rissani, is at the southern end of the Tafilalt oasis in southeastern Morocco. On the map this is where the palm groves of the Ziz valley stop and the pre-Saharan plain begins. The town has a market centre, and the palmeraie around it is dotted with ksour, the fortified earthen villages of the region.
Rissani's history reaches back to Sijilmasa, the medieval caravan city whose ruins lie just outside the modern town. For centuries Sijilmasa was a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. The Tafilalt is also the ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty, and the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif stands nearby.
A Reçani map poster shows the edge of the oasis in detail: compact ksar blocks, irrigation lines and paths through the palms, and the road running south toward the Erg Chebbi dunes. The contrast between the dense cultivated land and the empty desert is what makes this map striking.

Irrigated gardens and date palms fill the land around Rissani. They make a fine mesh of paths and plot boundaries that ends suddenly at the desert.
Sijilmasa site
The remains of the medieval caravan city lie close to town. It's the historical reason Rissani became so important.
