Sebeş Map Poster & Print
Sebeş sits in Alba County, where the Sebeş River leaves the southern mountains and enters the Mureş valley. Transylvanian Saxons founded the town and called it Mühlbach. It keeps a compact historic centre whose outline still follows its medieval fortifications. On a map, the old town is an oval of tight streets, with newer districts spreading around it on the flat valley floor.
The large Lutheran church dominates the centre, and parts of the town walls and towers survive along the edges of the old core. The river runs close by. The German name means mill brook, a reminder of the water that once powered workshops here. Today the A1 motorway passes near the town and adds a long, sweeping line across the valley.
Lancrăm, now part of the town, is the birthplace of Lucian Blaga, the poet and philosopher who was one of Romania's major twentieth-century writers.
