Shibirghān is the capital of Jowzjan Province in northern Afghanistan. It lies on the wide plain that slopes gently down from the mountains toward the Amu Darya. On a map the city looks flat and spacious. Main roads cross the centre, and residential blocks and walled compounds fill the land between them.
The area has a long past. Tillya Tepe, the site where archaeologists found the famous Bactrian gold hoard in the late 1970s, is close to the city. In more recent times the surrounding region has also become known for its natural gas fields.
