Tantou lies on the coast of Fujian Province, in the Changle area near Fuzhou, not far from where the Min River reaches the sea. From above, the land is low and flat, with a mix of streets, farmland, ponds and small watercourses. The coastline and the estuary are close by and shape the wider landscape.
The Changle area has long been a place of emigration, and many families from these towns have relatives overseas, especially in the United States. That connection has shaped local life, with new houses and roads built alongside older villages. Tantou is part of this wider coastal community around Fuzhou.
