Toride sits at the southern edge of Ibaraki Prefecture, on the northern bank of the Tone River, across from Chiba Prefecture. From above, the wide river and its broad floodplain are the dominant feature. The city spreads north from the water in a mix of residential streets, rail corridors and farmland, with the Kokai River also passing through the area.
Toride is a commuter city for the Tokyo metropolitan area, connected by the Joban Line, whose tracks cross the Tone on a long bridge. Much of the city grew during the postwar decades as housing developments expanded outward from Tokyo. It has since become known for a public art programme supported by a local university.
A Toride map poster shows a Japanese suburb shaped by a large river. The floodplain leaves a wide band of open land along the southern edge, and the rail line and older roads provide the main structure for neighbourhoods that are dense in some areas and open in others.
