Irrigation grid
Canals and roads divide the land into regular strips. This fine linear pattern is the most distinctive feature of oasis farming in the Tarim Basin.

Ying’awati Map Poster & Print
Ying’awati is in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin. The Taklamakan desert stretches to the north and the Kunlun Mountains rise to the south. Life here depends on water that flows down from the mountains, and from above the settlement looks like a green island of fields in dry country.
The map is dominated by irrigation. Canals and tree-lined roads divide the land into long, narrow plots. Houses are strung along them in lines, not gathered into one dense centre. The edge of the oasis is sharp: at a certain point the field pattern stops and the empty desert begins. Hotan city lies nearby, and the wider region has been known for its jade for centuries.
A Ying’awati map poster captures one of the most striking kinds of settlement on earth. Every line of road and canal serves the oasis, and every blank area beyond it is sand. The composition is unusual, graphic and clearly tied to its setting.

Houses along lanes
Homes follow the lines of the roads and channels rather than clustering together. The effect on the map is a settlement spread in long threads.
The desert edge
Where the water runs out, the field pattern ends abruptly. The empty desert beyond forms a strong, blank contrast on the poster.

For families from the Hotan oasis, and for anyone interested in how people live at the edge of the desert, this map has an unusual and memorable shape. It works as a personal keepsake and as a graphic print.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can all be personalised. You could add a name in your own script or a date. Sand is a natural match for the desert setting. Blueprint and Noir strengthen the irrigation lines.
