Bandar-e Kangān lies on the Persian Gulf coast of Bushehr province in southern Iran. The town occupies a narrow coastal plain, with the sea to the south-west and bare, dry hills rising behind it. From above, the built area follows the shoreline in an elongated shape, with streets running parallel to the coast and short cross streets connecting them to the water.
Historically a fishing and trading port, Kangān has grown in recent decades because of its proximity to the South Pars gas field, one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world. Industrial zones along this stretch of coast have transformed the region, and their large, regular footprints stand out clearly against the finer pattern of the older town.

Near the water, the older quarter is a dense cluster of narrow streets and low courtyard houses, the most intricate part of the composition.
