Korbach is the district seat of Waldeck-Frankenberg in northern Hesse. From above, its old town is a compact oval of narrow streets, still partly traced by medieval walls and towers. Beyond it, newer districts spread out in looser patterns, with larger industrial blocks on the edge and farmland and forest around the town.
Korbach was a member of the Hanseatic League, and it is the only Hanseatic town in Hesse, a fact the town still highlights. Its skyline is shaped by the Gothic churches of St. Kilian and St. Nikolai. The town is also home to a long-established Continental tyre plant, one of the region's largest employers.

Hanseatic heritage
As Hesse's only Hanseatic town, Korbach grew as a medieval trading centre. That history shows in the compact market core and its two major Gothic churches.
Industrial edge
On the town's outskirts, the tyre plant and other large sites form broad, simple blocks. They contrast sharply with the fine grain of the old centre.
