Northeim lies in southern Lower Saxony, in the valley of the Leine river north of Göttingen. On a map, the historic centre is easy to find: a compact oval of old streets, once enclosed by a town wall, with the later town spreading out around it toward the valley floor and the surrounding hills.
The town was a member of the Hanseatic League and still keeps many half-timbered houses and sections of its medieval fortifications. The Gothic church of St. Sixti rises over the old centre. Near the town the Rhume joins the Leine, and decades of gravel extraction have left a chain of lakes now used for leisure and nature.

Leine and Rhume
The Leine flows through the valley past Northeim, joined nearby by the Rhume, giving the map two rivers that meet in soft, looping lines.
