Arles grew up on the east bank of the Rhône, on a rise just above the point where the river divides into the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône. From above, the old town is a tight knot of irregular streets pressed against the water. The oval of the Roman amphitheatre sits in the middle of it, easy to spot among the smaller blocks around it. Across the river, the Trinquetaille district mirrors it on the opposite bank.
The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They include the arena, the ancient theatre and the cloister of Saint-Trophime. The town is also known for Vincent van Gogh, who lived here in 1888 and painted its cafés, bridges and surrounding fields during one of the most productive periods of his life.
An Arles map poster shows the historic core wrapped by broad boulevards, the Rhône curving along one side and the flat, water-laced country of the Camargue opening to the south. The contrast between the dense medieval grain and the wide delta beyond is what gives the print its structure.

Rhône divide
Just downstream of the town, the Rhône splits into two arms that enclose the Camargue. The fork appears on the map as a pale Y opening out toward the sea.
Boulevard edge
A curve of wide boulevards traces the southern edge of the historic centre, marking a clear line between the old town's tight fabric and the more open districts beyond.
