Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and its map still revolves around a single raised point: the Citadel, a fortress on a large, partly artificial mound in the middle of the old city. From that oval, the historic lanes spread outward in an irregular pattern, dense and inward-looking, very different from the planned districts that surround them.
West of the Citadel lies the long covered market, Al-Madina Souq, a network of vaulted passages that formed one of the largest historic markets anywhere. The Great Mosque of Aleppo stands nearby. The Ancient City of Aleppo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and much of it was badly damaged during the Syrian war; restoration has since been under way in parts.
Beyond the old walls the city grew in all directions, with newer quarters, broad avenues and public parks, and the small Queiq River running through its western side. Covered market streets run west from the Citadel in long parallel lines, a dense core of passages, khans and courtyards inside the old city.
