Alfornelos sits in the municipality of Amadora, just beyond Lisbon's northwestern edge, where the capital's suburbs meet in a dense patchwork. From above it reads as a compact cluster of apartment blocks, short connecting streets and courtyards. The heavy lines of motorways and arterial roads that carry traffic around the metropolitan area mark its edges.
Much of the district grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and the plan shows it: building footprints set at varied angles, small squares tucked between them, and patches of open ground where the terrain rises or dips. Alfornelos is also the name of a station on Lisbon's Blue Line, which links the neighbourhood directly with the city centre.
