Amherst lies in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, a few miles east of the Connecticut River, with the ridge of the Holyoke Range along its southern edge. The town is organised around a traditional New England common, and roads spread out from it toward villages, farms and woodland. Much of the land between these centres is still open, which gives the map a loose, rural texture.
Amherst is best known as a college town. The University of Massachusetts Amherst occupies a large campus north of the centre, marked by the tall W.E.B. Du Bois Library. Amherst College sits close to the common, and Hampshire College lies to the south. The poet Emily Dickinson lived and wrote here, and her family home is now a museum.

The historic common is an open green in the middle of town, bordered by Amherst College and the small commercial centre. It is the traditional heart of the map.
