Bādāmi, in Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, was once Vatapi, the capital of the early Chalukya dynasty from the sixth century. The town lies in a ravine between two rugged sandstone outcrops, and the map shows this clearly: a dense cluster of streets squeezed into the lowland between high rock.
At the centre is Agastya Lake, a reservoir held between the cliffs, with temples along its edges. The famous rock-cut cave temples are carved into the southern cliff face, and fortifications run across the heights. The old town's lanes wrap tightly around the water, while newer districts spread out on the flatter ground beyond.
