Bitam lies in Woleu-Ntem province in the far north of Gabon, only a short distance from the borders with Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. The surrounding country is equatorial forest, and on a map that absence of detail becomes part of the picture: the town appears as a concentrated patch of streets set within a wide, quiet field.
Its layout follows the main road that links the north of the country with the rest of Gabon. Neighbourhoods branch from that spine in short, curving side streets that respond to the gentle rise and fall of the land rather than to a grid. The result is organic and slightly asymmetric, easy to read at poster size.
