Braunstone lies on the western side of Leicester, where the city gives way to the suburbs and fields of Leicestershire. From above, the area is dominated by residential streets laid out in the twentieth century, many in the curving crescents and closes typical of planned English housing of that era, broken up by schools, playing fields and green corridors.
Braunstone Park, a large open space with historic Braunstone Hall at its centre, is one of the area's clearest landmarks on the map. Main routes lead out toward the M1 motorway, which runs close by, and retail and business parks near the junction contrast with the gentler residential pattern. The area has grown steadily as Leicester expanded outward.
