Buton lies off the south-eastern arm of Sulawesi. It is a large island stretched roughly north to south and fringed by bays, headlands and smaller islands. Much of the interior is forested upland with few roads, so on a map the streets gather along the coast and around a handful of towns. Between them are broad pale areas where the terrain takes over.
The densest street pattern belongs to Baubau in the south-west, the island's main city and port. Above it stands the fortress of the former Sultanate of Buton. Its long stone wall traces the edge of a hilltop, and it is often described as one of the largest fortresses in the world by area. The irregular outline sits just inland from the harbour streets and is easy to pick out.
