Chachoengsao sits on the lower Bang Pakong River, east of Bangkok, and on a map the river is the whole story. It loops in broad curves through flat country, and the town has grown on the inside of one of those bends. The streets stay close to the water, and the built-up area gets looser as it moves inland toward fields and fish ponds.
The town is best known for Wat Sothonwararam, the riverside temple that draws pilgrims from across Thailand to see the revered Luang Pho Sothon Buddha image. Near the old centre, short lanes run down to the riverbank, and a railway line crosses the plain toward the east. The result is a plan that looks like it was drawn by the river first and the builders second.
