Corfu town sits on the eastern coast of its island, facing the mainland across a narrow strait. The Old Fortress occupies a small promontory separated from the town by a channel dug as a moat. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on any Greek coastline. The New Fortress rises on the other side of the old town, and between them lies a maze of narrow streets.
The old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its layout reflects centuries of Venetian rule, followed by French and British periods. The large open Spianada square sits between the old town and the Old Fortress, and the arcaded Liston runs along one side. To the south, the curve of Garitsa Bay leads the eye along the coast.
