Delitzsch lies in northern Saxony, a short distance north of Leipzig. The medieval core still has a clear oval outline. The line of the old fortifications survives as a ring of streets and green space, and some towers still stand. Inside, a small network of lanes leads to the market square and the church. Outside the ring, later housing spreads across flat ground in a looser, more regular pattern.
The baroque castle and its gardens take up a distinct block beside the historic centre, and on the map they show as open space among dense streets. The small Lober river passes nearby. Beyond the town edge, broad fields alternate with lakes created by flooding former lignite pits. Their irregular shorelines stand out against the straight lines of the farmland.
Delitzsch is the birthplace of Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, one of the founders of the German cooperative movement, whose name the town carries into economic history.
