Devanahalli lies north of Bengaluru in Karnataka, on the gently undulating Deccan plateau. On a map the town is defined by two very different scales: the compact old settlement with its fort and narrow lanes, and just to the south the vast, rectilinear footprint of Kempegowda International Airport, which dominates the surrounding landscape.
The town is known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan, the eighteenth-century ruler of Mysore, and the remains of its stone fort still stand. The fort's outline, with older lanes inside and around it, gives the historic core a recognisable shape, while newer roads, layouts and highways stretch toward Bengaluru and the airport.
