Felixstowe occupies the end of a peninsula on the Suffolk coast. The River Orwell bounds it on one side and the North Sea on the other, and the Stour estuary opens just to the south, with Harwich across the water. On a map, the town is clearly defined by water on almost every side, giving it a distinctive wedge shape.
Along the seafront, the Victorian and Edwardian resort stretches in a long line of promenades, gardens and terraced streets. At the southern point, the Port of Felixstowe spreads across a vast area of quays and container stacks. It is the busiest container port in the United Kingdom.
