Feodosiya sits on the southeastern coast of Crimea, on the shore of a broad bay that curves away to the northeast. On a map, the old town gathers at the southern end, near the port and the hills, while a long, thin strip of beach and resort streets runs north along the sand. The contrast between the compact old core and the extended shoreline defines its shape.
The city is one of the oldest on the Black Sea coast. It was founded as the Greek colony of Theodosia and later became Caffa, a major Genoese trading port whose fortress walls and towers still stand. It is also closely associated with the marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, who lived and worked here.
