From above, Fes shows three distinct cities. Fes el-Bali, the old medina, fills the valley of the Oued Fes. Its thousands of lanes are so narrow and irregular that they look more like a texture than a street network. Fes el-Jdid, founded by the Marinids in the thirteenth century, sits to the west with its palace grounds and walls. Beyond them is the Ville Nouvelle, laid out under the French protectorate.

Historic walls surround the medina and Fes el-Jdid. Gates such as Bab Boujloud appear as openings where the old city meets the surrounding roads.
Ville Nouvelle
The French-era district to the south-west is built on long, straight boulevards and roundabouts. It is a clear, open counterpoint to the tightly packed medina.
