On the eastern side, the city reaches the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard. There the neat suburban layout meets the irregular inlets of a large reservoir, and the map changes character completely.
Major highways frame the city, including the President George Bush Turnpike and Interstate 635. Duck Creek and other small streams run through the neighbourhoods as thin green corridors. The historic downtown square, the heart of the town before its postwar growth, still sits near the centre of the grid.
