Getafe lies on the flat plain south of Madrid. From above, it is a compact urban area with a historic core of short, irregular streets, surrounded by denser apartment blocks and then by wide industrial estates. Motorways and rail lines to Andalusia and Toledo pass through or next to it. On the western side, the long runway of an air base and aircraft factory forms a strong straight line on the map.
Aviation has shaped Getafe since the early 20th century, and today the aerospace industry is still an important part of the town. The main campus of Carlos III University of Madrid is also here. To the south-east rises the Cerro de los Ángeles, a small hill traditionally described as the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula. A large monument to the Sacred Heart stands on top of it.
