Goleniów lies in West Pomerania, northeast of Szczecin, on the banks of the Ina river. On a map the river curves along the edge of the historic centre, and the town's compact medieval core is clearly visible, with streets arranged around a market square and following the line of former walls. A surviving gatehouse and fragments of fortifications mark the old boundary.
The town was once a member of the Hanseatic League, trading along the Ina toward the coast. Its layout still reflects that period, with a small, regular grid of streets and a large church near the centre.
