Greenfield is the seat of Hancock County, about twenty miles east of downtown Indianapolis. Its map shows a classic Midwestern plan: a regular grid of streets centred on the courthouse square, with Main Street running east to west through the middle. Around the grid, newer subdivisions curve outward and give way to the flat, squared-off farmland of central Indiana.
Main Street follows US 40, the historic National Road, which was one of the first federally built highways in the United States. Brandywine Creek winds along the west side of town, and a park follows part of its course. Interstate 70 passes just to the north, a straight line across the top of the frame.
Greenfield is the birthplace of the poet James Whitcomb Riley, whose boyhood home on Main Street is now a museum, and the town holds a festival in his name every autumn. A Greenfield map poster brings together the square, the long line of the old road and the gentle curve of the creek.

US 40 runs straight through town as Main Street. It is the main east-west axis of the map and follows the route of the historic highway.
