Hlybokaye sits among the lakes of the Belarusian Lakeland, and its map is organised around water. The town grew beside two lakes. Its main streets run along them and between them, so the lake shores shape the whole plan. Residential blocks stand in orderly rows, and beyond them the countryside opens into fields, woods and further small lakes.
The town is in the Vitebsk region, close to the old routes linking Belarus with Lithuania and Latvia. Its historic churches, including the baroque former Carmelite church, reflect centuries of changing religious and political influence in this borderland.
