Hradec Králové stands at the confluence of the Elbe, known here as the Labe, and the Orlice in north-eastern Bohemia. The historic centre occupies a low hill between the two rivers, and the water shapes much of the city's plan, with both rivers winding through parks and riverside paths.
For much of its history the town was hemmed in by fortifications. When they were removed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the space was used for a planned expansion, most notably under architect Josef Gočár, whose scheme gave the city a ring of boulevards, radial avenues and consistent modernist buildings. The city became known as the salon of the republic.
