Huauchinango sits in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, in steep, green mountains on the road between Mexico City and the Gulf coast. The terrain shapes everything here. Streets climb and curve along ridges and hillsides, and the town spreads across uneven ground cut by ravines, so the map is irregular, lively and full of bends.
The historic centre, around the main square and parish church, has a denser pattern of short blocks. From there, roads wind outward along the slopes, and the edges of the town dissolve into forest and small plots. Nearby lies the Necaxa hydroelectric system, one of Mexico's early large power projects, with its reservoirs in the surrounding valleys.
